sudden, he said out loud, "God, grant me one wish." Suddenly, the sky
clouded over his head. In a booming voice God said, "Because you have
tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish." The
man said, "Build me a bridge to Hawaii so I can drive over any time I
want."
God answered, "Your request is very materialistic. The logistics of such
an undertaking would be enormous! Think of what raw materials it would
take for the supports to ever reach the bottom of the Pacific. Think of
how much concrete.. how much steel! No, think of another wish I can do
it, but I can't justify your desire for worldly thing. Take a little
more time to think of another wish.. one you think would honor and
glorify me." The man agreed and thought about it for a long time.
Finally he said, "God, I love my wife very much. I wish that I could
understand women. I want to know how they feel inside and what they're
thinking when they give me the silent treatment. I want to know why
they're crying, what they really want when they say 'nothing', and to
know how to make them truly happy."
After a few minutes God said, "You want that bridge with two lanes or
four?"
